Kristi Kruse

Biology

Kristi Heath serves as the ASIM Biology Specialist for Region 2. Prior to joining the AMSTI-Athens team, she worked in Madison City Schools as a biology and forensic science teacher. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Secondary Education from Athens State University in 2018. Kristi was the first science student to pilot the EdTPA program at Athens State. She is passionate and committed to the learning experience of students and teachers.

K-2 Science

Nil Makwana

Chemistry

Nil Makwana serves as the ASIM Chemistry Specialist for Region 2. Prior to joining the AMSTI-Athens team, he worked for the Decatur City Schools System at Austin High School for 14 years and worked in England for 12 years as a Chemistry and Technology teacher. With a strong desire to help students and teachers, Nil came to ASU in November of 2021. Nil has a total of 25 years of teaching experience and has taught high school Chemistry, Physical Science, and Earth and Space Science. During his time in the classroom, he taught AP, Pre AP, Honors, Special Science Inclusion classes, and ELL students. He was named Austin HS Teacher of the Year in 2019. He believes in the importance of hands-on instruction and making science real and relevant to his students. Nil is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the American Association of Chemistry Teachers. He enjoys painting and drawing, playing chess, and following the English Premier League with a fondness for LFC (Liverpool Football Club, translation football = soccer).

Carla McPeters

Physics

Carla McPeters serves as the ASIM Physics and Physical Science Specialist for Region 2. She has 30 years of experience in the field of education. Prior to joining ASIM, Carla spent 24 years as a high school math and science teacher, focusing primarily on Chemistry, Physics, and Precalculus. During that time, she also taught mathematics evening courses part-time for Calhoun Community College for 7 years. Carla holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, a Bachelor of Science in Education in Comprehensive Science, and a Master's Degree in Mathematics Education. During her educational career, Carla was named West Limestone High School Teacher of the Year twice as well as Limestone County Teacher of the year once. She is also a Teach To Reach Award recipient. Carla is a former member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Alabama Science Teachers Association, and Alabama Association of Physics Teachers.
